Is Getting A Wireless Firewall Worth The Benefit?
To many people today, computer security is a very serious matter. Because of the fact that computers are used in practically every aspect of life today, people can be very vulnerable when these devices are concerned. When someone decides to invade a person's computer, he or she can get access to that person's personal information and practically take over that person's life. People with wireless networks are often considered to be the most vulnerable. This is the reason why a lot of folks are thinking about getting wireless firewalls.
What exactly is a wireless firewall? Well, it is a hardware or software device which is used to allow, deny or monitor data which goes into a wireless network. As said before, a wireless network is especially vulnerable to attacks form the outside. This is because anyone near enough to the router or access point will be able to open up your network.
Because of this vulnerability, there are a lot of cases of people actually stealing data and even internet services. Sometimes, this is even done unintentionally. A wireless firewall is used to prevent incidents like this. But how does the wireless firewall do so, exactly?
One of the most common methods used by wireless firewalls is recording IP addresses. As you may know, each computer has a unique IP address. By keeping a record of which IP addresses are allowed to access the network, a wireless firewall is able to prevent outside systems from invading the system. Although this may seem quite effective at first, you have to realize that a lot of hackers actually consider it pretty basic stuff to fake an IP address. There are certain situations when people need to make decisions if the unit trying to access the network is legitimate or not. Because of this, there are certain types of firewalls which alert the user before letting any type of data in. Using this type of firewall can be great -if you are willing to deal with constant interruption. Another method that wireless firewalls use works like this: when a certain system decides to access the network, the firewall does not search a database for any specifics regarding whether to allow the system in or not. The wireless firewall actually looks for patterns in the data and through these patterns, deduces whether a system should be allowed to access the network. Of course, this method does not always work. This is the reason why a lot of people are actually left wondering whether they should get firewall at all. In fact, a lot of people actually take down the wireless firewalls that they have since they believe that putting up a wireless firewall is useless. Here's the real deal: no security system is perfect. Any determined attacker will find a weakness in every system sooner or later. However, at least having a wireless firewall is better than nothing. Think of the reason why people have doors for their rooms. A door is just as vulnerable to a determined attack as any other security precaution, right? But it actually helps deter people from snooping around where they should not. Even if a wireless firewall does not completely deter a hacker, it could still work to delay him or her.
